Jacob & The Angel

Acrylic on found board

Representation of the Genesis account, in which Jacob wrestled with an unknown man. The identity of Jacob’s wrestling partner is unclear in the text and is interpreted as an angel, and as God by different traditions.

The episode can be seen as Jacob coming to understand his identity, and struggling over his relationship to something that is inevitable and ineffable. I hoped to capture the ambiguity between a struggle and an embrace.

In 2023 Jim began to make more works focussed on making images rather than live art. Jacob & The Angel is the most direct of these pieces, featuring no interactive ancillary elements.
